I fell in love with Malawian Church fabrics the moment I saw them. Besides being beautiful, they were quirky and funny. I knew of a fine Malawian tailor, Alfred, down the road. As his reputation preceded him, I gave him carte blanche to do whatever he wanted. He also frequented a Malawian Church, St Bernadetta in Capricorn Park, ten minutes from where I live.
I loved the idea of mixing the shoot up with some reportage shots at the Church and then more detail orientated shots on a background. As luck would have it, we were invited to shoot an actual Malawian wedding which was pretty emotive - I think everyone was moved by the warmness and humour of the congregation and the wonderful choir.
We were lucky - as they say "God is Good!"

Many thanks to the Saint Bernadetta Catholic Church in Capricorn Park and its congregation.
This project was Alexa’s concept from sourcing the fabric, to working with the tailor to organising with the church and putting together an amazing team of creatives. I was lucky enough to be invited along on this joyous adventure.I love using colour and print in my images and the setting for the wedding was a visual feast. All I had to do was observe and document.I was inspired by street photographers like Vivian Maier and Bill Cunningham and with each shot I aimed to capture the essence of the wedding and the mix of traditional prints, colour and details. One of my favourite images from the street series is of the little girl in her pink and green outfit complete with white sandals. The juxtaposition of her Sunday best outfit colour blocked against the backdrop of the spaza shop.To compliment the wedding images and showcase the fabric, which was the start of this concept, we shot Javis and Thimna in an outdoor studio setup. The fabric itself is very detailed and has messages entwined into the print. Alexa and Alfred, the tailor, were very thoughtful when cutting and making the garments, creating moments on the collars and sleeves.
"I’m somewhat of a maximalist and loved shooting the pattern against strong colour backdrops. With the street imagery I tried to find moments in the hustle and bustle, but with the fashion images I wanted them to be loud in colour and pattern but calm and considered in mood."
