After a productive shoot getaway to the Northern Cape Karoo with the team from iseeyousee magazine, founder Alexa Singer conceived the idea of doing a collaboration with Studio Muse in Kalk Bay, whereby we shared with their adult art students some of the styled still life images that Patricia and I took on this assignment, plus a few other photographs taken on an earlier trip to the South Sudan.

A dozen or so images were selected, and the students spent several sessions working on their artistic interpretation of theses photographs.

The work of the student artists and the photographs were then displayed alongside each other in the studio, on a well-attended public opening, which gave us an opportunity to see the results and meet some of the artists.

What a delight to see the variety of work they produced. Each student had their own very distinctive style and character which was very interesting to see sitting next to the original reference. It was great to see a couple of red stickers being attached to a few pieces that were sold, a testimony to talent.

A really worthy exercise and another great example of creatives collaborating to produce really interesting bodies of work. I would be keen to do that again. Thanks to Mirjam of Studio Muse for this opportunity, and to Alexa for the insightful idea.

Art Studio in Kalk Bay

Mirjam Macleod owns and runs Studio Muse in Kalk Bay and this is what she says about this collaboration: "iseeyousee magazine approached us a while back and said they wanted to collaborate with us. I gave an emphatic ‘yes’,  because I love their photographs. It has been a wonderful project.  We journeyed to South Sudan, sometimes to what felt like Paris or the Dutch masters. Often, students recreated the same images and yet each person’s interpretation was absolutely unique."

"Thank you so much Alexa Singer and iseeyousee magazine for this wonderful experience!"
