I’ve had the privilege of living in Surfers Corner in Muizenberg for a few years now. It’s often said that no two days are the same when you live at the coast, I can attest to that. Wind, rain, sun, light, the clarity, the mood of the ocean, the colour of the water, all those elements are forever changing!
I’ve been photographically documenting scenes and the vibe of this popular surfing spot through the seasons, some days being more photogenic than others but there’s always a shot to be had. Here is a very small selection of what is now a considerable and still growing portfolio.
In November last year, my niece, Evie Johnstone, an avid surfer and super talented photographer based in the UK, stayed a few days in the neighbourhood. It was her first visit. She shoots on analogue and digital, and adds video and drone into the mix, always with a keen, artistic eye.
Have a look at her take on her experience as part of our collaboration.
My visit to Muizenberg and it’s surrounds in November 2024 was a feast for the eyes. A whirlwind of new sights and sounds for me, it was difficult to put the camera down.
I was so enamoured with the place on my first visit here that I booked to come back again a few months later for a longer stay. The character of the neighbourhood and the engaging people who come here to enjoy it, are a photographer’s dream. I’m looking forward to spending more time behind the lens, there’s so much more to see and enjoy.
