Gina Niederhumer
Artist
Gina Niederhumer came from Austria aged 20 and made South Africa her home. Her works are frequently autobiographical stories in textile or paint. Gina’s work describes the personal and private. Whether this happens through a cathartic transformation of an inner conflict or a seemingly frivolous text massage taken from one of her journals...the work is both a quest for understanding her own life, as well as a visual externalisation of the process. During the confines of lockdown, Gina started to paint again after a long hiatus. While the world had become an uncertain place during the pandemic, there was safety and comfort in the familiarity of her objects. Her imagery often depicts the trivia of daily life. Gina Niederhumer holds a Masters degree in Fine Art from UCT and lives and works in Muizenberg. She is the founder of the ‘Palmer-Studio-Collective’ which showcases, next to her own, a selection of textile works from a variety of South African makers.
